comments for exhaust modification idea please
Hi all,
I've had a thought in the last couple of days. The Ferrari 360 has a dual stage exhaust system. At low RPM, the second stage of the exhaust is blocked off. Above a certain RPM, a solenoid is actuated which opens up a second stage, making it noisier and more free flowing. My idea was to add a second outlet to my stock banana muffler that can be opened or closed through a switch in the cabin which would activate the solenoid. This would let me have a noisy exhaust note when i felt like it at the flick of a switch. I thought that i could weld on a flange to the right side of the exhaust, with a solenoid in between the flange and the second tip. Anybody have any ideas for what type of solenoid i could use? These already exist. Check out your local speed shop. JC Whitney sells an exhaust bipass that is cable operated, there is also a solenoid operated version.

I think some 996 and 997s had solenoid valves on the exhaust.

The Volkswagen R32 has a vacuum-activated exhaust "flapper" that changes the tone of the exhaust when it reaches a certain RPM/Vac. Lots of people do away with so it is in the "open" position all the time.

I wonder if you could pcik up a 996/997 F360 or similar exhaust from a wreck or an update and take the flapper part out and integrate as you are talking about. Might be cheaper, probably not as nice. I bet there are a fair bit of these exhausts that get cast off for upgrades.

BMW has that too. I don't know about this on other model but 3 serrie has it, the exhaust valve. It open up at certain RPM. Street race guys has the y pipe adapter (whatever it call). You can attach a cable to it to close/open the valve. Original idea is to drive normal (close valve) and open up to blow it out. This is one of the part make you hear their car sound normal and all in the certain he blow extremely loud as he's driving a hardley. |

In case you didn't notice, i'm from australia, so those stores that some of you mentioned don't exist here heheh. I had the idea of finding a wrecked piece, but ferrari parts are like solid gold lol, and don't even get me started on F40 parts. I'll have a think and see what i come up with. I didn't intend to spend hundreds of dollars, more like a cheap solution to buying a new exhaust. I'll post if i get into it. |
There will be something like a J C Whitney in Aust. That will be the cheapest solution.

Don't forget that when you effectively bypass the muffler, the fuel mixture really changes and everything gets leaner.
Late EFI-controlled engines can programmed to automatically correct for this, but others might not. I would think this one all the way through. :) |
