Cutting spark by removing lead @ distributor?

Today might be the big day! After chasing down various fuel leaks, I may be going for a start and run-in this morning. Neighbors have already been warned...I have open headers right now!

I am running (attempting to run) Megasquirt and MSD, so this is very non-standard. In preparation for the real start I am planning on disconnecting the ignition and running the starter to get oil pressure up and test the connections for leaks. Is is acceptable/safe to simply remove the HT lead from the coil to prevent spark?

Pre-Start Cranking

JohnJL,
Why not remove the fuel pump fuse? this way you cylinders and plugs do not get any fuel during this cranking period.
Good luck,

I don't have a separate fuse for the fuel pump..its in a circuit with a bunch of other things ala Painless fuse box.

Good point on the pump, will disco that too.

Can I just pull the HT lead?

No!! Do not remove the HT lead from the coil to the dizzy. You can fry your coil and MSD. Disconnect the power going to the MSD.

What can happpen if you pull the HT to the dizzy is the MSD sends the high capacity charge to the coil which has no place to send it so what can happen is it arcs inside the coil between 1st and secondary windings. In otherwords it fries it.

THanks Bobby. My MSD power is hooked into my closed-up relay box and I want to avoid cutting the power wire...can I remove the + wire to the coil and wrap it up in tape?

The better solution would be to get an extra spark plug and connect the HT lead to the plug and ground the plug.

Removing the positive to the coil would protect the coil but it might harm the MSD. Don't know for sure but better safe than sorry.
