Usage in Porsche lore started with the '55 model named to commemorate Porsche's involvement (rather successful) in the Carrera Panamerica, which was commonly referred to as 'The Mexican Road Race' ... of course everybody knows it came to mean any model with the 4-cam engine back in the days of the 356! More recently its' usage became rather 'blurred' when applied to models such as the '74-'75 models, 930, and production 911 models that were not intended for, and had nothing to do with racing, per se!

Warren:

Actually I think that you will find (from reading Cristophorous, Excellence, and other Porsche literature), that the use of Carrera by Porsche AG has been reserved for their higher performance cars. This is not to say that it is not misused, only that Porsche AG TRIES to use it on cars which are "better" or "higher performance" than their "stock" or entry-level cars.

Therefore, the 1974 Carrera WAS higher performance than the stock 911; the 1983 Carrera WAS higher peformance than the stock 911SC; but Warren you are correct that lately it seems that they, Porsche AG, is using it way too often. I wonder if they don't feel that the higher performance of recent models now justifies its use willy-nilly (with no disrespect intended for any Willy out there). I also wonder whether Porsche North America has anything to do with this. I have met Fred Schwab, and he is more a business guy than a car guy. And he, for one, would probably think the use of Carrera would have more "cachet" in these USA.......Andras
