oil tank
1.What would be the reason for a mixture of oil and condensation slime build up at the fill neck and the breather hose to the oil tank. How would you go about flushing the tank out. 2.After removing the oil filter I found what appeared to be peices of paper clogging the bottom flow holes for the oil filter.The paper was being pushed from inside of the tank to inside the filter.Does anyone now what the cause of this was and how to make sure all the peices have been removed from the tank.( the tank appears to be stainless steel and in really good shape)

I have had that same slime build up a couple of times over the years, and it always seemed to happen in colder weather when a bunch of shorter trips had been made ... not really getting up to full operating temp. The one time I decided to take the tank off and clean it out, touch-up stone damage to the paint coating, change the oil level sender gasket, and 'S' hose ... I flushed it out in a two-step process, first with about half-gallon of gasoline ... shook vigorously for a couple of minutes, then drained. Second step was with about a quart of B-12 ChemTool carburetor cleaner, again shaking vigorously for a couple of minutes, let sit for five minutes, shake again, then drain. Rags were stuffed in the major outlets and vents to keep as much solvent INSIDE the tank during shaking! After I had taken off/out the sender, I could check inside with a penlight and found a clean tank inside! It is also a good time to change the O-ring between the oil filter mounting base and the tank ... if the junction shows any 'seepage' of oil! I don't really know what to tell you about the paper scraps, except that you may want to try multiple rinsing cycles with gasoline until no more scraps of paper can be seen, or found, and that you have an even stronger reason to remove the filter base mount than I did ... and do a thorough cleaning!
If you have an external cooler up in the front fender, you may want to remove your cooler and thermostat for a thorough cleaning, too! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 04-02-2000).] |

I used Sperex VHT Black, normally used on exhaust, but since that tank stays hot most of the time, it seemed appropriate!
