very interesting question
how much power would be lost (percent wise) by excessive valve lash ....that's on the order of 2 or 3 thousands?

I don't think it's much at all. Probably less than a few percent. The specified valve lash is to accomodate for possible thermal expansion. If you have way too much it will maybe wear the cam lobes and rockers faster. A few thousands shouldn't really matter. Too little is bad since not fully closing valves tend to get burned and destroyed due to reduced heat transfer to the valve seats.
