Talking Finished first big project!

First post at Pelican, Here's what i got. Recently my father and I purchased a '79 911 SC in May of this year. I knew it was going to be a project car from the beginning.

First things first, we had to change the carpet out since the original had been soaked with transmission fluid from a leaky trans seal, which i pain stakenly fixed.

Next we decided to tackle the oil leaks. Replaced: Oil return tubes, 4 oil lines valve gaskets. Along with this we stripped out the old exhaust and retro-fitted Bursch headers and sport tuned muffler. We stripped out the air injecters and plugged the holes. We also replaced the oil sump cover with a sweet looking billet cover.

Changed shifter bushing and added a Weltmeister short shift kit. New Avon tires, and freshened the paint on the wheels. Here are some pics of the recent adventure.

After every thing was installed, we filled 'er up with oil and jumped the dead battery. I noticed small tapping sound from the left side of the engine. At first it idled kind of shaky at about 700 rpm. It sounded like it was missfiring or the timing is off. If someone could help diagnose, that would be great. Other than that, she runs pretty good and sounds awesome. Let me know what you guys think.

Looks like you did a nice job, I bet that was satisfying. Enjoy!

I would like to point out that the way you have the billet sump plate oriented may cause you oil pickup/starvation problems (though it appears the drain plug is moved further to the edge from stock). I would advise, perhaps at the next oil change, to rotate the sump plate 90*. This will put the drain plug on the left side of the car, and the fins running longitudinally (as opposed to now--transversally mounted). This will allow the airflow to pass straight down the fins as you go down the road, but more importantly it will allow the oil pump to pick up more oil (thus better oil pressure) because the drain plug won't be in the way.

Cheers

Well, I'd say for your first post you are doing damn fine! I didn't know squat about my car, and didn't even know how to post pics yet!

Welcome !

Impressive first post. Obviously you are not the rookie I was when I joined this forum...uh.. and still is.

Tapping sound. Ticking ? I suppose it could be a couple of loose valves. But judging from your excellent work I am positive you have ruled something that simple out already.

Will do. I should have looked that up earlier.

Ya im not sure, its more of a buzzing, or vibration sound,I think it might be the new cross over oil line to being bolted down. I still haven't been under there to figuire it out.

Your car looks extremely nice. Have fun and enjoy the time working on it with Pops!!! I am not offering a diagnosis, however I too had a tapping sound that could be heard constantly, it was my intermediate shaft, high mileage car and an unloving original owner resulted in full rebuild(not because of the Intermediate shaft, the Oil pump however which is connected through the int shaft just wouldn't get the oil to my 6th cyl and wore out the lobe, rockers, and crank for the 6th cyl and so of course my cyl got too hot and broke a head stud, just ugly). THIS IS THE STORY MY MOTOR TOLD ME AND I AM STICKING TO IT. I am again not offering a diagnosis. Just commenting.

edit---> Tapping and buzzing aren't the same thing so this truly doesn't apply, just read and thanks for letting me get that off my chest...it was painful to recall..

Man! you and your dad jump in with both feet Good job. I see what might be a little problem and might want to recheck it.
I might be mistaken but I don't think the seal is in all the way

Sorry about the confusion, I was out of it when i posted for the second time. It was a tapping sound, I ran it today with a new battery installed and it seemed to run and idle a ton better. The sound is there but not very loud. It has about 140 K on it, so i will defenately not eliminate the possiblity that it might have the same problem as you experienced. Thanks for pointing out my error.

Thanks for pointing this out, however im pretty sure its in all of the way. I had the valve cover off when i did the install and it seemed to slide in fully. No leak from there yet [crossing fingers-and knocking on wood].

Any suggestions on how to plug this without having to weld?
