Can someone run an engine number for me?

I would be grateful if someone could run this number for me and get some more info - 6380743. type 930/03

Is this the early or later SC engine with the higher HP?

"L" series = 1978 SC

Thank you Mike,

What is the average value on a good condition one of these??

If this engine that I am looking at turns out to be solid and a good deal, then I might consider it as an alternative to getting my engine rebuilt. Not that I think it is required right now, but I am sure it is going to be on the must do list within the near future - the way things are going on my car at the moment...

This is what I am looking at:
.- No is: 6380743. type 930/03
.- Engine is complete, ready to start up, incl Carrera 2,7 heat exchangers and mufflers.
.- Perrys motor installed and restored it 25000 km ago newly installed hydraulic tensiors and full service at Ofners Porsche service.
.- No documentation but known history
.- Price is SEK 45000:-

I am also in discussions with someone else in England regarding a 3.6. But that will cost me a bit more. The benefit with a replacement 3.0 is that I do not have to do a besiktning etc here in Sweden, which when you upgrade the engine apparently can be a real pain in the a$$...

Aha, its that engine on Blocket.se?

What do they mean with "restored", any engine work done except the tensioners?
My first thought was that it was expensive.

I'm a litte pissed about not buying a 3 liter 78 engine I saw 2 years ago. Asking price was 25k... and it had rebuilt heads and new piston rings.

I am with you on it looking expensive at the moment, but I am in discussions with the owner and trying to get all the relevant info. But As I said, I am also looking at a 3.6 at a good price.

Once I know the exact status on the 3.0 I will asses if the price is good or not. I am trying to base it on what it would cost to do a full rebuild on my engine. I am planning to get a full leak down and compression test done on my current engine to asses its health, and then I will take it all from there. But based on the engine number, it is older than the one that is currently in my car - not sure if that is really relevant, but always worth considering...

At the end of the day, If I do decide to replace the engine instead of rebuilding, then I think I would much rather do a 3.6 upgrade :) I am just assessing my options at the moment!!!

But then, I will probably not get it in the end, as there are also so many other important projects to be done on my car. I am just having some bad luck at the moment. Everything is going wrong on my car at the moment, and every project I start turns out to be 100 times more complex and difficult then I expected, based on 30 years of corrosion etc :( So I am just counting the days until the engine decides to go as well....

But I love this car, and find the work fun - as long as I still keep the funding at a sensible level and do not count the total cost... That is what I have to keep saying to myself anyway ;)

And yes, it is the one on Blocket :)

safe 08-21-2006 11:04 AM

Yes, I know what your saying.
My engine is probably on its last stint too, 170000 km (106k miles) without any mayor engine work...

Then you have the choise buy a used engine or rebuild. Cheaper too buy a used but its also a big unknown. A 3.6 would be nice :)
