Motorola alt

I've got some confusion about the voltage regulator for a 70w Motorola Atl.

Is the regulator built-in or external.

TIA

Marc-Andre

If you mean a 770 Watt Motorola/Marchal alternator, it is definitey external, mounted over on the panel with the CDI-unit on the left side of the engine compartment.

Porsche use the 70 amp alternator from 1976 to 1982. All 70 amp units, except 1982, used an external voltage regulator. If you are looking at changing your alternator you may want to upgrade to the internally regulated alternator. The process is quite easy and is outlined in the May 1999 issue of Panorama. The article also outlines the modification that needs to be made to the alternator dash light. I would suggest that you upgrade to the 1984-1989 alternator which has 90amp output with 1260 watts, this will help take the strain off of your electrical system if you have added things like cell phone, higher amp stereo, A/C, etc.

I would agree with the above. I just had the exact procedure (upgraded alternator)completed on my 81SC.
