Early S clutch

Just found out my '68 S is supposed to have an aluminium pressure plate that costs more than twice that of the cast iron one the T uses(and that was actually in my car). Can I get away with the cast unit or is it worth the price to get aluminum. Also I understand the S flywheel was copper plated to match the aluminum unit, as I'm sure the flywheel I'm using is't an S spec it won't have the copper, is this O.K. The S copper plated flywheel is not mentioned in any parts company I've looked up.

I'm sure you can continue to use your 'T' pressure plate and disk without any fear or concern, until the disk is worn out. At that time you will probably experience slippage in 4th or 5th gear. Sachs has a 'Power Clutch Kit' for all '65-'69 911 with a higher clamping force pressure plate, improved lining disk and throwout bearing for around $390 ... that sounds just right for your application!

The S pressure plate is no longer made. They make another pressure plate that is even lighter and more clamping force but is around $600 YIKES, looks beautiful though it is even drilled out on the face to lighten even more, looks like a 906 and is still for sale.

You can use the cast iron, but understand you will loose two things.

#1. Is the lightness on the movable mass, which helps in quick response of the motor, just like a lightened flywheel works, but you actually loose more weight on the aluminum pressure plate and this helps also in wear on the bearings, well just a little.

#2. Cast iron is not the best in material when working with a clutch disc, since it is just what an old frying pan is made of to hold in heat, ever cooked with an old cast iron frying pan? With an aluminum pressure plate it dissipates heat better so the clutch works better and will last longer in the long run.

Now if you cannot afford a $600 aluminum pressure plate, then look for a used one and they also can be reworked to work again just like new. OR go to a better disc, Kevlar we make them and others do to if you look around.
