Car stripping
What experiences have you all had on stripping of chassis. Sandblasting vs. chemical dip, that sort of thing. Looking for some opinions.
Thanks, neil |

The best way is using a chemical stripper and the blasting technique with the walnut shells,
Sandblasting and chemical dips will damage or remove the Zinc coatings |

I did a "down to the bare tub" repaint on my SC. Had the entire car dipped. There was no rust on the car, just wanted to strip off all the old paint (it was green), grease, etc. The result was incredible! This was soooo mutch work though. I really don't think I'll do it again. You can only imagine taking off every last bolt on a car. Putting it back together (lots of modifications) was extremely rewarding, but I had a lot of help or it still wouldn't be done.

I forget where I just saw something on this could have been My classic car on TNN. Anyway they talked about this and they talked about a concern of the dip gettin into frame pieces and causing problems over time. I don't know how Porsche frames are made or if this could be of concern.

To have this done properly is not a one step process. The car was pre treated, dipped, post treated, then dipped again to insure everything was neutralized and washed off. I honestly cannot remember the specifics of the process, but at that time I was satisfied that the process was safe. Many VERY expensive cars were in line to have this done so I felt pretty good about the little SC. If in doubt, don't do it. As far as pix - you bet I've got an album full, just no way to get them on the net.

If you had a scanner you could scan them into your computer. There is a web page called www.photopoint.com you can store the pictures here and everyone can see them from there. The way you get the pictures there is you set up an account (no charge) based on you E mail adress you E mail the pictures to the web site, it recognises your E mail and puts the pictures in your account.

There is a place here in Houston called Soft Strip. For 500.00 they will completly remove all of the paint on your car. The guy I talked to said it was so gental that it would not damage plastic rubber or glass.
I will be paying him a visit soon, Ill keep you informed. Tom 73T |

I just stripped my 81SC. I used chemicals with some sanding. On hindsight I would not have stripped it down to the galvanizing because it (the galvi.) does get damaged some in the process. Unless your cars paint needs stripping down to bare metal, I wouldn't go down to bare metal.

Some of my pictures are on disc, there is probably an easy way to get these to this site. Any ideas?

Rarly, just post them to some site such as Photopoint (mentioned above). They have easy ways to post pics like this - you just click, find the file on disc, and it uploads.
Once you have them uploaded, you can specify the address here in the forum, and post your pic...I'm sure you all have seen this one: Just click the "UBB Code is ON" link when you post for a reference of the codes to post pics. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 |
