Track tires?
I am doing drivers education events this summer along with open track events and I had a couple of questions regarding track tires. Presently, I have 2 sets of wheels. My orginal 16" 6 and 8" and a new set of 17" Fikse 8 and 9". Common sense would say that I should use the Fuchs for every day use and take the Fikse's to the track with track tires. I like the way the 17" tires feel and handle and I want to use them everyday rather then 3 or 4 times a summer. My question is, would it make any sense to use the 16" tires as track tires even though they are smaller and narrower? Part of the reason I am considering doing this is that I just put Bridgestone S02 Pole positions on my Fikse's and I can tell that a couple more of these events are going to leave $1000 of rubber on these tracks. (I love to get that tail around with the tire screaching!!) Would racing tires on smaller wheels still be an improvement over larger wider street tires? Thanks.

I am certainly not 'current' on what sizes of racing slicks are available from Goodyear or Hoosier, but those 16" wheels are certainly commonly used on the tracks by Porshe road racers, and I am sure you wouldn't be losing that much of an 'edge' by using them.

Buy a set of 225-50-16 BFGoodrich G-Force R1 road race tires. You can order them from Discount Tire. They will do more for your confidence on the track and lap times than any other improvement you can make to your car as a bolt on change. I wouldn't worry about the narrower widths but you might try to find a set of 7X16's for the front. The G-Forces have a real stiff sidewall that resist lateral movement but wider is better up to a point. I ran the G-Forces 4 Porsche Club Races last year and one race at Texas World Speedway this year and have been real happy with them.
