Doesn't want/need a 3.6L
|
Jerry,
Congratulations on a succesful turbo conversion. Your preliminary times do seem to indicate a very fast car.. ![]() In 2004, Steve Wong and I did some similar logging while mapping chips for me and to try and get some comparisons with a 3.2L motor and my than new 3.5L twin-plug conversion. Steve's '84 3.2L (while stock internally) has all of the typical "bolt-on" mods for a 3.2L, guestimating power to be somewhere in the 235-245 crank horsepower range. My '88 dyno's in the low/mid 240's on a dynojet, so add in your desired driveline loss for a crank horsepower number. On a straight, level road and in 3rd gear from 2,100 rpm to the 6,840 rpm cut-out used for both cars, Steve's car (with him solo) did it in 15.5 seconds and mine (with him in the passenger seat adding some additional weight in an already heavier car) did it in 12.78 seconds. Things have changed though since those tests, his car is in a slightly different configuration and my car's been lightened 200 lbs. since than but if you can log a similar test to ours it will give those interested some idea how much faster a turbocharged 3.2L can be over normally aspirated versions, albeit not taking into account car weight differences. It would be nice to also get some data on completely stock 3.2L's (which Steve probably has) just to see how dramatic a difference it really is... Ralph |

I have logs of stock 24 pin and 28pin, also autoauthority and steves 24 pin. We were always around 15 -16 seconds from 2000-6500. It's good to know other people saw the same numbers.
Right now I'm using proto's stage one, and the curve is messy. Steve didn't have one to sell at the time ( ithink he does now though) I used 6000 as the high mark because I really dont want to go all the way up with the turbo, so i was measuring from 2500 to 6000. 8.66 seconds in the turbo and 13.58 in NA with Steve's chip It's a tiny bit fast I'll look at another stock '88 log and see what it shows. thanks for the comments |

I have one of the logs that Steve ran for me, but I can't change the parameters to show what the time would have been for 2,500-6,000 rpm.
Looking at the graph (and if I'm reading it correctly), I would "guess" that 2,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm for the 3.5L in my car when run a couple of years ago would be somewhere around 9.0 - 9.5 seconds??? You aren't even done tuning it yet, I'd like to see what the numbers are on a dynojet versus stock (you did do a baseline, right?)... If only we didn't have stringent emissions laws in California... oil drain...
FYI, I'm planning to use one of these to drain the oil from a GT35R BB turbo into the chain housing cover via some purosil hose:
The new Garrett's don't need that much oil anyway and the suction pressure from the engine should scavenge the oil back into the motor reliably ![]()

that's what we figured merv,
ralph, I'm envious of your purple line. here's a shot of today's compared with a couple months ago, you can play with the time stamps. These two show almost 5.5 seconds. also notice I stamped the turbo a few RPM higher. I'm getting interference on the pick up clamp and I've heard it's harder to use on magnecor wires. I'll wire it up better soon. ![]() |

The difference betweena N/A and a turbocharged engine a phenominal.
My data point: Modded SC engine - 14.2 sec @ 92 mph in the 1/4 mile. Modded 930 engine - 8.5 sec @ 90 mph in the 1/8 mile. Same car, same tranny. 60mph - 100mph times were reduced from 10 sec to 4 sec.

Jerry,
Is the motor stock in your 87? Have you counted the number of fins on your cylinders to verify which P&C's you have in the 3.2?
