Door Handle Trigger broke, how to fix?
Outside door handle trigger broke, lock works fine.
Took it apart and found that the trigger wore out the area where it rotates on the small hinge pin. If I can find a used door handle ('74-'83) I can dismantle it and just use the trigger. Left or right doesn't matter. Right now I can only open the door from the inside. :( Does anyone have a used door handle? aquastar@netidea.com SmileWavy |
If you find a used door handle, just use the whole handle. The lock barrel comes out and you can insert it into your "new" door handle. Lube the thing nicely while you have it out.

When I pulled the trigger it just collapsed and stayed there, did not open the door. I have to open the door from the inside.
Is this what happened with yours Gunter? Does our host sell the parts? |
limble: Exactly.
The trigger hinges internally on a small shaft. It doesn't get any lube there and over the years the metal on the trigger just wears through. To fix it, you have to take the door panel off and remove the door handle. Then you can dismantle the handle to get at the trigger. I don't know if the part can be bought seperately; I am trying to find a used handle. My door panel, and handle, is off and I cannot drive now. A lot of work for a small item. Oh, what fun. |
BTDT. Try the classifieds for parting out cars.

Gunter,
I remember reading a posting by a member who machined a replacement trigger. This was a while ago. Do a search and see. |
It's much easier to find a used/broken door handle and re-use the trigger. '74-'89 will do.
The picture is somewhat fuzzy but there should be only small holes where the worn out slots are. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156948216.jpg If anyone has one of these, please, send me an E-mail. aquastar@netidea.com SmileWavy |
I think its aluminum you could probably just tack weld those spots and file it down to clean it up?????
|
It's too thin there to weld.
The easiest by far is to find a broken used door handle. |

Gunter,
Did you find a door handle? What should I expect to pay? I just started looking. Mike |
I had that happen last year. I found a guy the was parting out an '83. He had one handle left and I bought it for less than $100.- Switched the tumbler out and the drivers door works great again!
I did keep my old handle in case I run across the trigger. Dave |
slodave,
Will either handle work? Or the trigger from either? |
According to Pelican, the handles are different for left or right.
The triggers should be the same. When you take the door panel off, mark the wires for the switches! |
I handles are the same. You just have to rotate the tumbler accordingly. My driver door handle is actually from the passenger side.

I made mines with an aluinum part from a Volvo bumper. A good grinder and drill. That was about 7 or 8 years ago. No pics of the work involved but really no big deal. Try it, you'll have nothing to lose. Good luck.

again what is the cost of a used one?? this seems the best way to go why mess with it? I see them for 50 -100 dollars at least you are up and running. Now I know that there are always budgets involved but this is such a PIA if you get locked out or can't drive the car because if it. I would even consider buying a new one for the piece of mind. I know that money does not go on trees, But this would be a good investment much like chain tensioners
