JB Weld Removal

I recently fitted some elephant racing poly bronze rear spring plate bushs. I used the JB weld method, and got over concerned with making sure they stayed stuck in the right place, so I put the JB weld both on the shaft and round the bottom of the aluminium bearing race. In doing so ive now turned my adjustable spring plates into non adjustable ones. Is there anyway to remove the JB weld without destroying the bearing races. Would heating work if so what temp would I need to get it to, to melt the JB weld. It says on the packet its stable upto 500f thats about 260c will it melt at this point or will it need substantially more heat. and would it kill the aluminium?

Thanks Steve

This is directly from the jb weld website faq.

A: When fully cured, J-B Weld can only be removed by grinding or filing it off, or by directly heating the product above the 600 degree maximum temperature threshold.

I don't believe I would heat any parts on my car that hot.

While JB weld does a nice job of filling cracks, in my experience it doesn't have good shear strength. I would just finish up the job and go for a drive. After hitting a few bumps it should break the JB Weld loose and you will once again have adjustable spring plates.

So you suggest I undo the bolts that hold the adjusters in place so they are free to move other than the JB weld, and hope that it cracks and allows the spring plate to move. Worth a try I suppose.

Is he talking about the union between the 2 plates or the bushing the he welded inoperative? Sounds like the latter to me in which case I'd start over with new bushings. And, if he does that, might as well heat them, which will destroy them, but at least they will come off clean.

Or, he could call Chuck at Elephant. Very helpful guy with a lot of ideas.

I assumed the JB Weld got between the plates. I shouldn't assume!

I JB welded the bearing race to the springplate shaft as suggest by chuck I over did the jb weld a bit and also stuck the bottom part of the race to the section of the springplate that moves when adjusting. Hence the moveable section is glued to the shaft via the bearing race and a big dollop of JB weld and wont move to adjust the spring plate.

I may contact chuck to see if he can just supply me with 2 new aluminium races then I could grind off the one on each springplate that is glued to the adjuster.
