911 Shock Replacement
What special tools do I need to remove the front and rear shocks on a 88 911 with Bogie OEM shocks and where can I purchase them.

If memory serves me correctly, you need..
Good selection of metric sockets and open ends (13,14,17,19mm at least) 1 large pipe wrench (to remove the factory strut cap nut) 1 impact wrench (electric is fine, avail at Sears)this makes removing top nuts alot easier. 1 tie-rod separator Jack and jack stands. The job really is quite straight forward. just takes a few hours. |

Unless they made a change, you will need a 22 mm wrench and socket for the 14 mm bolts at the bottom rear, and also for the nut at the top of the strut in front.

The fronts are relatively easy I just replaced my Bilsteins,
All you need is a large open end wrench or crescent for the top nut ,the king pin on the bottom can be a bit of a pain as you need a non tapered punch about 3" long of just the right diameter too big it will get stuck halfway too small it misses the edges of the pin After much frustration I had to go to a specialty tool shop for it the chain and local stores dont carry them, after knocking out the pin and taking the top nut off you compress the shock down and away, relatively easy. |

Ref: Front Shock Replacement, 88 911
Can anyone help me out here with step by step procedures ie: jack up auto, remove wheels, disconect tie rod, remove 22mm nut on top of strut, support assembly with floor, whats next? bigdaddy |

1st you loosen the nut on the shock tower on the top ball joint
Then knock the king pin out of the bottom of the shock with a non tapered punch Next you jack the car so the shock will slide out of the top ball jount and compress the shock down while pulling a way from fender, Thats It you do not need to remove the lower shock strut [This message has been edited by jryerson (edited 04-23-2000).] |

I've never needed a punch to get the wedge-pin out ... I just loosen the nut until it is even with the end of the stud threads, then hit it with a hard plastic mallet, the clear, yellow kind, 2" in diameter and 8-9" long head. A couple of good raps, 'square' with the end of the stud, with the mallet, and they come loose! Getting the ball-joint stud out of the bottom of the strut can be a chore ... sometimes a 'pickle-fork' is needed, but maybe not. A large, very secure bench vise is needed when removing and installing the 'cap' on the strut!
