Chain making noise !!!!!
Well took my 89 911 3.2 to wrench today and got some bad news .
The Good Starts up perfect , idles fine , runs strong . The Bad after complete warm up the engine has an intermediate rattle under load , left bank area . no power loss . When cold no rattle at all . He is not entirely sure that the chain is the problem . He has indicated to me that is also could be a valve or valve guides since I am consuming 1 qt per 400 miles . He says that he does not do top ends on a car that has 185k on the clock . Valve guides were replaced at 90 k He reccomended TRE in N. Hollywood for another opinion before I . He said they would probably do a top end at a reasonable price . Any ideas without opening up the engine what this could be and is it time to park or fix ?? I would appreciate all imput . 1989 911 3.2 |
Sounds like valve guides. Maybe an adjustment will get you another 1000 miles or so, but at 1 qt per 400 you are right at the brink of a complete rebuild. TRE is a great shop BTW.

400 miles per quart not 100

I changed it - and yes, 400 per qt is where I decided to take my engine down for a rebuild. Didn't want to run the risk of overheating then dropping a valve.
