'73S Engine Rebuild
Time to rebuild the 2.4S motor in my '73S. What am I looking at in terms of cost for a solid rebuild? Possibly blueprinting the motor as well. Is it worth the extra money to blueprint the rebuild?

Well, it depends...
Motormeister in California do cheaper rebuilds with somewhat mixed results judging from people have written here. Paul Weir in Seattle do expensive rebuilds that they claim are among the best in world. The price difference between these two companies can be anything up to 5K! Blueprinting is not recommended for a 911 engine, because you're likely to waste your time and money. Porsche use high quality materials and have high standards of assembly. Steve, On blue printing depending on what the car is to be used for, it can make a difference even on the quality of Porsche. If one does not believe, take 12 NEW rod bolts and look at them under a Jewelers eye, you will see flaws, or take 10 NEW timing chains and check each link and you will find some that are sticking. Also on most 911's the factory balanced the motors with in 7 grams, while a Turbo was with in 3 grams and then when we blue print and balance we bring it to 1 gram. But Porsche is still VERY good with their quality, but yes blue printing will not hurt. Have you ever thought about rebuilding your motor "YOURSELF"?? It can be a very good learning experience and it is not as hard as most think. Taken a Porsche motor apart and putting it back together is not an art at all, now there are some mechanics who will 100% disagree but that is because of $$$$$. What is an art is KNOWING what can be rebuilt and what cannot, knowing the correct specs and tolerances. This is a Master's rebuild kit which includes all parts and all machining, all this leaves you is labor? So either YOU can do the labor or even another mechanic can do the labor. As Roger put it, yes we are cheaper, but in "Labor," see the time manual shows it takes 60 hours, well at $50.00 per hour that's $3000.00, WOW! Also, when choosing a machine shop, use ONLY the most state of the art that is up to date on the newest technology, not a 60 year old crankshaft machine that cut cranks in the 1940s, but machines that are specialized in today's racing applications, yes you 911 is a race car motor compared to other auto's, twin over head cams, twin carbs, dry sump system ect.
