Adding Carerra Oil Cooler to SC
I managed to pick up a Carerra oil cooler at Hershey - no fan on it so I assume it's from an 84 thru 86. Where can I purchase the stone guard, short oil lines and the brackets for mounting this puppy on my SC (replacing the trombone)? Also, I want to add a fan. I assume the Mocal is a good, reasonably price choice. Do I need to change the thermostat or be concerned with anything else. I plan to simply run the fan off a manual, fused switch for the really hot, sticky days here in WashingtonDC. thanks much

Further to the above, I notice the kits selling the all the pieces, including the cooler, do not include the stone guard or the foam/rubber gasket around it. Are people making this conversion running without the stone guard? Is this wise? Thanks again for the collective wisdom.

You can cut a piece of screen to keep the rocks out of the cooler,
The shroud helps force air thru the cooler as opposed to going around it, in addition it helps keep air turbulence from the tire from fighting against you I made a custom bracket for my cooler I dont think the stock brackett from the Carrera will work as the mounting area bolts on the body are different You really need the fan to make a difference in the temps unless you are doing 70+ ,the fender area gets very little air,the fan helps where you need it most when you are stuck in traffic. I ordered a Mocal fan from BAT but they sent me a Spal instead, the fan is very loud but it makes a great difference in the cooling temps. With 107' temps here in Vegas before I had the fan I couldn't run my A/C for any length of time without getting above 225'+. Once it gets above that area it quickly would get much hotter. With the fan my temps stay below 220' |

jryerson - how did you wire your fan - to switch on with thermostat or with a manual switch from the cockpit? Your custom brackets - are they welded to the fender well? Thanks much

I purchased a 7.5 inch SPAL fan from BAT in FL to mount to my carrera cooler on my '75 911. With the engine off I am able able to hear it run but not noticable with the engine running. The 7.5 size was perfect because the fan mounting holes are spaced the same distance as the width of the cooler. I was able to screw the fan directly to the cooler flanges that run down the side. The stone guard is attached to this flange on one side of the cooler. Automotion sells the mounting kit, foam gasket, short hoses, etc, vey pricey though. I wired my fan to a manual switch using the advice that Warren posted on a an earlier thread.

Beagle011 - thanks for the info - indeed, I have the Automotion cat right in front of me. Don't know how I missed it. You're right - pricy! I tried searching on "oil cooler switch" and "oil cooler" -- - - both searches came back 404. Search engine must be taking a nap.

I wired it with a switch, to me it seems that once the car gets hot +220' its much harder to cool it down, by turning the fan on early it keeps the motor cooler
The brackett I made by purchasing galvanized light steel strips (with the holes in them) at Home Depot and bolted it to the old hoop brackett bolts on the body. I shaped the brackett to a L and used stock rubber snubbers to secure it [This message has been edited by jryerson (edited 04-28-2000).] |
