No Headlights ???
Hi Everyone. Its been a long time since I've posted. Been busy.
But I took the car for a 200 trip on Friday. 100 degrees. Didn't even take a screwdriver. I was so proud of her. So I go to move her over to shop. NO HEADLIGHTS. Dandy. Here's the data. Pull out the switch. First step. The parking light indicator comes on. Parking lights are on. Second step. High beam indicator comes on in either position. HUMMMMMM. Neither headlight comes on in regular or high. I get 12volts at all 4 fuses for the lights. Thoughts ???

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say the high beam/turn signal switch has gone bad, especially if you don't have a Sucro relay kit installed.
My $.02.

Yes, the turn-signal switch. I would bet.
There are some contacts inside that look like relay contacts. If you do a search you can find info on doing a home repair. I tried it but ended up with a new switch.

I have a strange one with 79SC. I have turn the key back just a little, like i would be turning off the car to get the lights to work. I must have a bad contact in the ing switch.

Well I'm finally getting around to tinkering with the lack of headlights. The drama gets worse. If I put in the flat Hella H4 from the 914. They fire right up. The BIG H4 do nothing. ??????
So I bench test with the battery. The flat H4's will fire with any combo of connections from the battery. The big H4's will not fire with the ground wire in the ground location. If I put the ground to the low beam lead on the bulb. Then the 12v to the ground lug it will fire. But not vice versa. Some one smarter than me needs to explain what is happening. I'm heading to NAPA while I wait for a response. TIA.

Correction : I put the jumper from the battery ground to the low beam lead on the bulb. Then the 12v jumper from the battery to the high beam lead. The bulb fires.

Hi Cary,
You have volatge to the fuse so it is between the fuses, the lamps and your grounds. Some tests to try: With the headlights off, put a volt meter between the connector and a chasssis ground. With the low beams on, you show see voltage between terminal 56b and ground. For high beams, terminal 56a and ground. If they both test out ok, try using the ground connection in the connector itself. RoninLB posted this reference photo to help you locate the pins: ![]() I am thinking you have a grounding problem.

Harry it has to be a dead short in the bulbs. Both of them. How could that happen ?
I went and bought a pair of 55/60 at NAPA. Fired right up. Go figure. Something in the base of the bulbs smoked. But why would driving for 4-5 on high beam smoke the bulbs.

Who knows. Check your connector. Is it fried? You might want to to (if you do not already have them), the Heavy Duty Hella ones like in Ronin's picture. I got mine from Daniel Stern when I did my relay upgrade.
