CV Screaming for Grease or ...?
I've just noticed when driving my '72 911T that at 60 mph and above (only) I can hear a metal on metal screaching coming from (I believe) the left rear wheel area. I have also noticed that although the CV boot seems to be in good shape there is a significant amount of grease in the area. Could this be bearings sreaming for grease? Or...? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Ir doesn't sound like a CV-joint to me ... more like your rear axle bearing. But, to be sure, you neet to get the back end up on jack stands ASAP and get under there and do a bit of turning, listening, and poking around! Whatever it is sounds terminal for some part, be it bearing or CV-joint. You don't really want to have that bearing wallow out the housing, or seize-up on you doing 60 mph!
You need a torque wrench and an 8 mm Allen drive to get the axles off, and two tubes of SWEPCO 101 moly grease, amd four new CV-joint gaskets, at the bare minimum to get started lubing the CV's. It might be helpful to have four new boots on hand, too, just in case! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
