Anyone Upgraded To A Electronic Ignition System From Breaker Points?
I was wondering if any of you guys with older 911s or 912s have replaced your points with an electronic ignition setup? I am looking at replacing mine with either a Crane HI-6 and PS91 Coil or a XR700 and PS91.
This seems kind of confusing to me but has anyone tried any type of conversion like this? If so what do you think of it? Any noticable power gains? Anything different (starting, idling, etc.) and is it worth it? Thanks! |

as far as my application is concerned it is a little different but ... I am as we speak finishing the wiring in of my Crane Hi-6TRC and have the full manual in front of me. You can use points or any mag. trigger to fire it. A coil compatibility chart comes with the instalation kit. The Trc is (timing control) that adjusts with a knob from in the car (up to 20Deg) retard and can be used in boost, NOS, Start retart or deticated retard for bad gas.
Get the TRC. Not Just the HI-6 I tell you this because the TRC is very new and costs about $20.00 bucks more than the older 1st generation that everyone still sells. (Read as - trying to unload). The older one will do almost Everything that the new one can do if you add another $100.00 box to it. Summit Racing sells it now around 350.00 total (with the coil) The LX-92 coil is preferred. Crane is 7 miles from my house and no I don't work for them. Call the tech line and ask for pete in Ignitions He seems like a good guy. the box was 299.95 the coil was 59.95 (and the Opt. boost sensor was 57.95) S&H was 7.00 (3-day ground) E-mail me if you have any further question that I can help out with. Hope it helps |

Well actually I am kind of confused about just what I need. I want to get rid of my points system and get somthing more efficient that I don't have to adjust every few thousand miles.
I also want to gain a little performance. I know that i probably won't gain any more than 5hp max but I need that 5hp So what exactly does the HI-6 do? Do I even need it? I was thinking that I had to have it or a similar device in order to run a non-points ignition system. What I would like to do is get rid of the points system and have the HI-6 to fool around with it's adjustments (I think it has a rev limiter control and stuff) So what all do I need to do it right? I am assuming the HI-6 or HI-6TRC, a LX92 or PS91 Coil and some type of actual conversion for the points I guess that would be like the XR700. Would this be the stuff I need to complete the conversion? And what kind of neat stuff do the HI-6 systems have? Like do they have rev limiter or anything else? Thanks for all the help! |

You don't get rid of your points. You will no longer be able to use a dwell meter. However, the points gap is not critical when the points are only used for triggering and do not carry any coil current. Use a feeler gauge and set the points to a gap of .016".
You might gain that 5 hp because at the lower RPM's it Has multiple sparks for about 20 deg of crank rotation and above 3k RPM you will get a single higher current spark at the plug. Don't buy anything else but the box and a coil. The only other thing that you might need is a tach adapter for VDO tachs (did 912's come with tachs?). Some features are: digital sequential rev limiter (600-9000) retard capability stage limit sloted adj (RPM) switches internal dianostics tach test step mode tach test ramp mode Bla ..bla..bla In short it is pretty nice. I took off a MSD6AL box and Blaster 2 coil for the change over. If you want any more info Email me I don't want to bore anyone. |

Well will I still need to adjust the points?
I am new to thsi stuff, heh. So basically the points will send a signal to the box when it's time to fire and the box will send a signal back to the distributor and then fire? |

All the points will do is ground the trigger and the box will send a signal to the coil to send a spasm of sparks from the coil to the dist then the plugs. Since there is no coil current running throught the points the gap is not that critical (read as don't worry about them) nor will they burn up (Pit).
You can probably get away with checking them every once in a while. |
