air box cover needed?

This might be a stupid question, but do you need the air box cover? cant straps be put over the filter, since fabspeed sells ones just like it without the box cover for around $200. Any suggestions. Thanks

The only reason would be excess water......I cut a bunch of slots in mine, no problems at all

You don' need no stinkin' cover!
I used my straps criss-crossed to hold my K+N on and it works just fine.
I carry my cover just in case I get caught in a heavy rain. I usually only drive it when it's sunny so it hasn't been a problem.
When washing I try to keep the water to a minumum around the intake.
I agree, $200.00 to replace a part you can take off for $0 seems kinda goofy.

It will get dirty real fast, dirty filter is bad for your car.

The filters are not cheap, do you want to change it every couple of weeks?

Mine is still nice and clean. Of course, I 'm not tearing through the desert, either. Think about other aftermarket filter setups. They are open and exposed to the elements. The ram-air setup I had on my 94 Z-28 was under the front fender with an open element K+N. The instructions cautioned against driving through deep puddles. I had that in many rainstorms without any problems. Obviously, the path to the 911 throttle body is more direct but you get what I mean.

I have one of these on my SC with a K&N filter. The pic is not my car though. Pretty pleased with it. No need for the straps that wear out. It storms in Singapore and have had no problems.

If you can clean your filter often. If you don't care the hot air come in from engine heat. If you don't care the look of the nice looking $200 cover, then whatever hold the filter there is good enough.
