Smokey 930

Hi Guys!

Hope you guys can give me some idea!

Smokes on idle when warm, temp guage half way!(blue smoke)

Push the throttle to 2.5k rpm and it will run with no smoke at all!

Let the revs die, and blip the throttle, it will puff on the blip! if that makes sense?

Had the turbo rebuilt last month, as i thought it was turbo seals, so it cant be the turbo.

If it were rings it would smoke under load! Also had a leak test done, march last year and all 6 cylinders are within 5% of what they should be!

My specialist wants to pull the heads off, to find out whats going on! But what if it's not worn guides, would be a total waste of money taking the heads off!

The car is a 1987 4 speed U.S car from CA! Has had smog unit, air con, and CAT removed! Done just over 52k miles.

Any help would be fantastic,
Cheers,
Si

Worn valve guides or bad turbo. How did they "rebuild" the turbo? Once shaft gets scored, it's hard to seal it again so just swapping bearings won't help.

You can take off the valve covers and wiggle valves in their stems to check for play.

Turbo Technics rebuilt the turbo!

It had new seals and bearings, they said it wasnt that badly worn anyway! They said it was all pressure tested and then their VSR core balancing machine tested it to 250,000 rpm. So the turbo is fine, this leaves me with valve guides or piston rings

I don't think it's rings. If rings were worn you would expirience very high oil consumption, bad leakdown #'s and excessive blow-by.

Probably valve guides. Not so expennsive to fix. While there, check compression rings for cracks. They are often in pieces.

Is it worth replacing the rings while heads are off?
And is there anything else worth doing?

Thanks for the reply buddy!

Not to jack the thread but I have a somewhat similar question. My 930 doesn't smoke at any time except for a slight puff out of the wastegate exhaust tip under heavy throttle at upshifts. Also often lets out a little flame from there as well.

Something to be concerned with?

I heard about an issue with smoking 930's using Mahle oil filters. Anyone else heard about this?

David,
I believe that pertains to 993 turbos. Much information on the Rennlist.

ok the flames thing thats not something to be concerned with it's something to be proud of. as for the smoke how much oil do you put in when you change it ? if it's to the top line then it's too much and you probably have oil all over the inside of your intercooler and evry where else.

Cool, thanks. Now I feel safe using these Mahle filters I've got sitting here.
