Fuel vent hose missing
On my 1970 911T I noticed that there should be a hose connected to the back left side of the air cleaner but I can't seem to find a hose anywhere in sight that looks like it belongs there! I believe it is a vent line that should come from the gas tank or charcoal filter. So I followed the lines around the gas tank, filler, and charcoal filter and they are all connected as well as recently replaced by PO. I'm trying to figure out where this hose should originate and wish to hook it back up.
The reason I'm checking this is that when driving the car after filling up the gas tank, there is always fuel smell coming which works it's way into the cabin when driving down the road. It's most noticable with a full tank. The tank doesn't appear to be leaking at all and all the fittings are tight. I did notice that there is also an overflow hose in the front left wheel well connected to the Gas tank filler but it doesn't seem to have any strong odor and is not leaking fuel at all (I don't top-off the tank). Is there a diagram somewhere for the fuel lines or any ideas on where to start looking? Thanks Dan |

I have a 70 911E. From 70-72 all Porsches intended for sale in CA had a fuel evaporative system. I had the same gas smell caused by a plastic tank under the left front fender that had split. I took the whole thing out of the car.
If you want to fix it please send me your fax number and I can fax a diagram to you. |

How large is the ID of the hose that would fit over the barb fitting? Is there another vent hose already running from the air cleaner housing to the oil tank filler neck?

Thanks Allan, I did see the plastic tank in the left front fender as well as one under the cowling on the drivers side by the antenna.
I'll remove them both and check for cracks. Warren, the hose ID is very small, this is not the large vent hose that connects to the oil tank filler neck, that one is connected. It's located on the back, left side of the air cleaner and has a small hose which runs across the back of the air cleaner to the right side where it vents inside the air cleaner. It appears as though there is a hose intended to be part of the fuel vapor recovery setup. Thanks Dan Thanks! |
