Light switch in door post?
Hello everyone,
Mr Incompetant here again... Latest question concerns the round switches in the door posts. These operate the interior light when the door is open. I tried replacing the driver's side switch a few weeks ago, but managed to let go of the connecting wire. This disappeared into the door pillar. Despite trying with some long tweezers I can't get at the wire to pull it back through the hole and connect it to the new switch. How do you access this wire? Do you have to take the door off first? Thanks, - roGER |

Use something like fine piano wire that can be extended down through the hole, yet is stiff enough to form a hook on the end. You should be able to retrieve it this way.

I just replaced one of my door pinswitches, and my wire broke off too. The way to get the wire accessed is to look under the dash, on the vertical surface near the hood release. You will see two rubber grommeted holes with wires going into them, one is for the door speakers, one for the light switch. What I did was pull out the lightswitch wire, it willl be the one that comes out easily. Once the wire is under the dash, solder about six inches of wire to the end of it and push it back through the grommet it came out of. Now get a coat hanger and bend a tiny hook onto the end of it. Get a flashlight, and wigggle the wire from the inside, while looking through the hole in the doorpost. There should be a lot of extra wire in there thanks to the piece you added, and you should have no problem snagging it with the hook in your coathanger. Pull the wire out with the coat hanger, cut off the excess, and solder on the new switch. Good Luck.

I would encourage anyone 'extending' any factory wiring by soldering anywhere in the car to be sure to use HEATSHRINK TUBING over the repaired wiring ... and TWO LAYERS where it might be subject to rubbing in inaccessible areas such as this!!! Otherwise, you may have a surprise in the form of a run-down battery at the most inopportune time!
