911 clutch work, how much?????

It looks like I will need to replace the clutch on my '81 911SC (all factory, except for necessary upgrades).

I would appreciate an estimate on what I should expect to pay for quality work. Has anyone had work done lately in the Bay Area, and if so how much should I expect to pay? ( I know there can be many variables, but I would still like to get a $$range)

Thanks in advance.

I'm down in the South Bay, Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area. The price I was quoted was approx. $1300-$1500 to replace a clutch on a 87-89 Carrera. There may be a bit of difference in part costs, but the labor will probably be the same.

I just completed a clutch rebuild myself and can tell you that parts alone should be in the $600 to $700 neighborhood alone. Possibly more. Mine needed a flywheel, and "turning" them is (I am convinced) a bad idea. They are very thin.

Plus labor. And it takes severa hours to R&R an engine (at least that's what the book says).

IMHO, there should be engine/tranny R&R competitions between repair shops, and I suspect that a seasoned veteran could remove one of these things in less than an hour, no problem (with air tools).

Do yourself a serious favor ... contact your local PCA region and find out all the good shops in town. When my 930 needed a clutch, I was quoted (here in Wichita) $1350 by the dealer and $1250 by the only good independent in town. I called my favorite shop in Florida, and he did the clutch for $700 (disk, TO bearing plus 5 hours labor. Flywheel was fine.). A good shop can drop a 911 engine in 2 hours. I drove the car to Florida to have the clutch done and saved the airfare plus another $600 at least.

I also live in the bay area and use Kahler's in Pleasanton. Probably the most highly recommended indpendant Porsche shop in the bay area. Haven't had just a clutch job done so this is a guestimate. The engine has to be pulled. I figure 5 hrs in & out and 2 hours to do the clutch. Plus the cost of a new clutch, about $450 for a clutch kit. Looks like at least $1,000.

I agree with mtnbike001 - Kahler's comes highly recommended. However, I would expect the estimate to be closer to $1500 for a COMPLETE job, flywheel and all. I have also talked to my mechanic in the past about the clutch in my '86 Carrera and his quote is also about $1500.

Just a bit of info on Kahlers,
My dad who is a recent 1st time Porsche 78SC coupe owner took his car in for the 1st time for a tune there as they were recommended his car has 50k original miles and ran perfect (I know because I checked it out before he bought it)$1100.00 later they did minor maintenance, result-the car now has a rough idle during warmup which they insist is normal which of course is not!

He called to have them fix the problem (as the car ran perfect before he took it in) and the sales person hemmed and hollered how they would need the car for a few days to check it out (knowing this would discourage him from bringing it back).
This is total crap!
They sized him up when he came in figuring he is someone they can take advantage of
which they did, he will never take his car there again.
Not to mention they charge $85 per hour minimum, they charged him $85 to put a bolt on the rear grill(granted it took them maybe 5 minutes to remove the rear condenser)
This place is a total rip off!

Seems to me that the price to R&R the clutch changes significantly from 87 on to 89. These are the first years of the g50 gearbox. It seems some other changes have to be made along w/ the clutch change....forks. bearings...flywheels...etc. Anyone w/ specific info on this?
