interior door handle replacement

I know this is supposed to be very routine. Trust me I could break a steel ball. My 84 m491 has those cheap-ass plastic door handles. I purchased 2 aluminum handles. My understanding is you pry out actuating rod from handle (lift up and out). Then remove pocket perimeter. You remove clip holding handle onto the rod. Install is reverse. This sounds way to easy for me. Will I lose the actuating rod inside of door panel once removed from handle? Vise grip the rod first? thanx r.t.

rteague,

Its as easy as you think. Been a while but have done it many times - in many cases the rod will come out with just you fingers. No you will not loose the rod in the door. Pretty straight foward.

If my memory is correct that's the easiest part of the job.

Good luck.

Earl

I think buffjamr was asking if you got the polished aluminum ones or the black painted ones.

black. my interior is all black and plastic stock were black. got them on and didn't have to call my mechanic although the clips old and new didn't fit the handle. aluminum about 1/16 in too thick. had to file down bottom of handle where the clip went through. I also screwed up some things but fixed them. r.t.

There was a set with the emblem on ebay not too long ago. I've seen some others on ebay for like $40 a guy makes that are really nice. You can get them slotted or drilled but he hasn't listed them for a long time and I misplaced his user name.
