2 OPTIMA red tops.

Apart from the added cost, and extra weight is there a downside to keeping the double battery setup and installing 2 red tops in a 71 911t.......

Do you need add'l ballest for some reason?

Only one battery is needed, or two factory types if you want to remain in good stead with the faithful.

Also, I think the original dual setup used two much smaller amp rated batteries that were probably a lot lighter than a higher rated single battery, so your dual Optima's might be a fairly heavy option...

Only if you want two boat anchors up front.

Seriously, there are a lot better batteries than an Optima for an early 911. Search here for more information. Mounting an Optima on its side is a recipe for a big fire when the positive shorts against the body or gas tank.

I agree with John. Make sure the battery or batterieis are firmly secured to the chassis. You do not want to arc weld w/o a helmet.

You'll want to avoid any battery with open venting of charging gases to the inside of the trunk. Battery acid vents out too and will slowly eat away the front end.

There are few larger capacity batteries that fit upright in the stock location (early 911), but there are more expensive alternatives. The German Sonneshiems (sp) are sealed batteries, but they cost ~$180 ea. and not sure they're equivalent (CCA rating) to one Optima.

A single lightweight Odyssey (sealed) seems to do the job for many owners. Sub-zero operation might be iffy because it's so small.

I have heard of some recent Optimas having some qualty-control issues; probably due to their now being a part of a huge battery company (Exide?). But my first Optima lasted many years with few issues, and my second is still alive after 9 months (knock on wood).

If you have your heart set on a 2 battery setup, I would use dual Odyssey dry cells. They are very light ~15 lbs each, and fit nicely in the factory housings.

I have a single 925 unit installed in mine, works very nice, but I have always fancied going to a dual 600 series setup to balance out the nose.
