915 to G-50 conversion, shifter the same?
 

Im getting ready to install a G-50 in an 84 coupe and curious if the shifter is the same on both trannys or is the later a better, smoother shifter? Any one know the install problems on earlier car? Any problems on the G-50 that I need to know about??? Thanks, Mark

Since you're a senior member, i'm hoping that you are aware that a G50 will not fit in a 915 tub without (extensive) modification to the frame. I think its because a G50 is physically longer then a 915.

I'm no expert on the subject, but i'm guessing the shifter is different, as a G50 shifter is spring loaded to self centre between 3rd and 4th gear. Also, when i looked into aftermarket parts, i noticed that various mods are specifically for the 915, and specifically for the G50.

There was a thread somewhere about some guy doing this. Involved a lot of cutting and welding.

You need to do a search. If I remember correctly it takes major surgery to the tunnel and tub to make this conversion. IMHO it would be easier to find a g-50 tub.

As you probably know, G50 differs from 915/930 when it comes to shifter mechanism. It's completly other way around.

915 shifter is hinged in the middle and you take power out on the other side of the stick so all movements are reversed.

G50 gearbox needs all movements to follow your hand so completly different mechanism is done. Stick is hinged in the bottom with two uniballs, power is taken from the middle of the stick. So you can say lower end of the stick is movable transversally and middle end (where you tap the movement to gearbox input shaft) is movable longitudinaly and axialy. I know it's hard to explain but take a look at fabspeed aftermarket shifter and you'll understand.
