Carbon Monoxide/Exhaust testing?
I think I may be getting some exhaust in the cabin thru my heat exchangers - when I turn on the heat - but I'm not sure. I bought a battery powered carbon monoxide alarm, like what you'd use in your house, and have been driving around w/it on my dash. It hasn't beeped yet, but I don't trust it. I know this is serious stuff, so I'd like to know for sure if I'm going to pass out while driving on the highway when I turn my heat on. Is there a testing device that I could hold up to my heater vent that would tell me w/absolute certainty if there's exhaust comming through? And who might have such a device (that would be willing to let me borrow it from them - even for a small fee?) Might a garage or mechanic have something that would work?
Thanks, Tom

Just a data point: my '75 S had 5 ppm CO in the cabin at idle with the heat on. This was before the complete rebuild, but since it appears you have factory original HEs, as I did, it may be reasonable to assume you do have CO in your heated air. I borrowed an atmospheric quality tester fro work (for confined space entry) to do my check. Maybe an environmental/industrial hygene outfit in your area could do a quick check for you.

Try putting the CO detector by your head. My dash gets a flow of fresh air all of the time through the defrost vents...

Should be zero. Five PPM is high to me but I don't know what the TWA (federal time weighted average) is off hand.
