My A/C is out on my 83SC. It's the origional
York so it was time to replace it anyway, my question is , I've obtained a used Sanden rotary and need to know what else I need to replace to get my air back to cold. |

I assume the Sanden is similar to the compressors used in the 84 - 89 Carerras and if so, you will need to change your mounting bracket. The newer bracket is larger than the one used for the York and it attaches, at one point, under the engine. It's a pricy bracket if you have to purchase it separately.

To save some $$$, if you are handy and have a some light shop equipment (vice, drill and files) you can use the existing York base and adjuster plate to fabricate the new mount using some 1" angle iron as mt.tabs.
Cut the angle iron to the correct length for across the front of the comp. Then drill the 2 holes (one on each end) for the bolt mounts. Then hollow out the center section of the angle iron to conform to the curve of the compressor. Do the same for the back. Now with that done, bolt the 2 angle mounts to the comp. (both angles inward under the the comp). Lay the comp on the old York adj. plate about in the center from left to right making sure that you will still have room for belt tension adj. later. Line it up on the plate so the belt is strait (pulleys line up) and mark where your angle front and rear tabs are placed. Now weld the new mount tabs to the plate, clean it and paint it black (or powder coat it). If you do it well, then it will look factory done. One caution: If you weld on the car always disconnect the battery Or you will smoke the diodes in your alt., ask me how I know $$$. The cost was 1 hour for me and 10 min at the welders. Total material, hardware and welding labor was about 15.00 (plus some fittings and a short A/C line 30.00) . Or you can just buy a new mount set. If you are not sure you can make it, buy it and save the headache. good luck s You should also replace the drier and vac the system down to get rid of the moisture in the system before you recharge it. Expect that the a/c shop will need to make or adapt a line or two. I think the york compressor is a boat anchor. The comp. you are changing to is better. |
