Turbo catalytic question
I was wondering if anyone makes a cat-bypass for a late 80's 930. I have seen them advertised for naturally aspirated engines, but not for turbos. Thanks,Mike

Mike, I'm not sure if there is a cat bypass for a 930, but it's possible to find a used Porsche Euro muffler, which bolts right on and has no cat; I got one for $375, and it gave me about 20 horsepower.

Thanks Vic, but when you mention euro muffler, do you mean complete exhaust?

It's just the muffler ... the 86-89 930's already have the rest of the Euro exhaust. The 78-79 cars need the entire thing to get the gains.
Or that's Bruce Anderson's take on it. The aftermarket headers will reduce turbo lag, but he feels the factory headers are good, too. Especially given the $2000 for new ones. Vic 87 930 [This message has been edited by vjd3 (edited 05-10-2000).] |

Has anyone comments on B&B or Powerhaus or other mufflers for 930's. Powerhaus did the rebuild on my turbo and I have no complaints. I would like a little more go, and a more distinctive sound.
Next: electronic boost control like HSK, again pro/con or 1 bar spring. thanks david 89turbocab |

We have had a B&B muffler for over three years now on out 1987 Turbo and it works great. saved weight, gained ground clearance in the rear and the engine emissions were lower with the B&B than with the stock muffler/cat, probably because the engine breaths a little better. I bought the large single outlet model and it is well made and fits perfectly. This was done at the same time as a larger, long-neck intercooler and HKS electronic boost controller were added so I don't know if the muffler made any significant HP gains? I put the stock muffler/cat on every two years to get the smog check done. Good luck.

Thanks John. I can do the installation of the pipes and intercooler, what is involved in putting in the HKS unit?

If you follow the directions exactly it is easy. The sensor reads boost and a new line goes to the waste gate to let it pop when the pressure get to the settings syou decide on. I have 0.8 bar normal and 10 secs of 1.25 bar which I have only had to use once to beat someone. The instructions that came with mine were easy to understand and the sensor fits under the cover for the ignition controls on the left side of the engine so the som folks never know it is there. One thing you have to do when done is let the unit "learn the boost curve" and that is taking the car in 3rd gear from 20mph to red line at least three times so you will need a nice flat, straight road. The tech folks at HKS are pretty nice too. Good luck.
