oil temp
My friend has a '77 2.7 911. I have an SC. His engine seems to run hotter than mine - with his oil temp getting up to 100 degC. The bypass valve to the front cooler is working, but only seems to open at about 95 DegC.
My car runs about 20 Deg cooler. Do the 2.7's run hotter, or should we be looking at the bypass valve. Thanks Alan |

How do you know the temps are really 20 degrees cooler? Keep in mind, the factory temp gauges are pretty crappy and resolution / accuracy is poor.
I bought a long probe temperature gauge that I can drop in the oil tank. It is 11 1/2" long to measure oil temp.. I have a new thermostat. Oil heats to 210 ish degrees F in the tank and then stays at that temp, which is when oil is dumped to the oil cooler via the thermostat. Seems like a good temperature, since water would boil off at about that temperature. I bought the thermostat from Mcmaster.com for $30 and it is good for + / - 1.8 degrees F. If temperature stays constant, I suspect the cooler is doing its job. If it heats up with ambient temps and / or loads, the cooling system may not be able to keep up. Doug

Hi Doug,
So yours is running at 100 Deg C then (212 F). Which may well be the normal temp? Thanks Alan

Yes, my oil temp heats to tank temperature 210 to 215 and remains. That corresponds to 8:30 on my factory dash gauge.
