30 mpg on Carrera 3.2 possible?
I just took a round trip from Austin to Dallas and back and racked up about 500 miles. The interesting thing was I was seemed to be averaging about 30mpg. I said to myself, "that can't be right." Has anyone ever heard of mileage like this on a 3.2 carrera? Mine has 126k and running all stock. Mixed AC driving and at night windows and sunroof open. I just can't believe this thing returns that kind of mileage. Anyone have a similar experience?

It wouldn't suprise me if you drove in a way to get decent mileage. I drove in such a way that I would expect pretty horrible mileage, and I managed 23. Driving at 60-65 and accelerating reasonably (something I was never able to do), I wouldn't at all be surprised to get 30mpg. I think some folks here have reported that before for 3.2L cars.
|
I say no way.
|
got over 30 mpg on recent trip all freway 80 mph and less 3.2L stock. r.t.
|
Before my rebuild and going to a 3.4 I would get 28-29 mpg doing 85-90 driving on the interstate. Now I am down to around 24mpg. I believe it...

Is it a RoW or US?
|
I have a US car and speed was averaging about 70 to 75 mph
|
I go from here to the coast regularly on the weekends. I set the cruise control for 70-80 and average 32+ mpg in the winter, around 30 mpg in the summer. My 911SC got in the mid 25 mpg range, and the 914-6 gets around the same as the 911.
There has been lots of material published on this, including several test articles. The mileage is due to the pulsed injection, which also gave Porsche a huge advantage in the 80s in Le Mans and F1. I think there was a thread posted here too on the subject, and most 3.2 owners reported similar mileage. |
On my trip from Houston out to my eventual home in Portland, my 73 RS replica with 3.2 Motronic was averaging right at 30-31 mpg while cruising at 70 mph on the highways.
Definitely possible.... |
As Diamondblue stated, I was able to get 28 - 29 mpg on interstate maintaining speeds of 75 - 85 mph when my car was mostly stock.
Definitely possible IMO |
easy, I have had well over 30mpg driving like a granny on a long journey once (had a REALLY bad hangover!)
|
I have 2.2 that has been stripped down. I think I got 30 MPG on last trip. I am not 100% about my calculation cuz my sender and guages are OLD but I can't be far off. I had a hard time believing it until I read this post. BUT there is almost nothing stock about my motor.

My UK spec 3.2 regular achieves 30mpg+ on a run at motorway speeds.
Of course UK gallons are slightly bigger. |
Sure it's possible...mine give me around 28 on cruise at 65 mph...
|
When I picked up my bone stock 3.2 in Chicago I averaged 28 mpg at 70 mph. At 93 mph average, it dropped down to 23 mpg. ;)
Now with the 3.4 I average 18 in the city and 22 on the highway - of course I'm also always sticking my foot in it too.. ;) |
last week, on a 290 mile trip about about 1/3 interstate ( 5th gear) and 2/3 two lane country roads ( 4th-5th with stops) I averaged over 25mpg in my '86. 30mpg for all interstate driving very possible.
Filled her up in Watkins Glen and averaged 11mpg for the next two days. talk about versatility. |
It's easily possible if you're cruising.
The killer for milage (and engines) is short, stopstart journeys in heavy traffic. |
Best I ever got was 25mpg. That's about 500 miles per tank of fuel.
|
I'm just under 25 mpg on the highway. Maybe I need to get a tune up or something.
|
Yes, if you drive conservatively without punching it to pass you can get 30 mpg from a 3.2 Carrera.
|
My 86 3.2 Carrera, bone stock, 165k miles, is a daily driver and I turn about 60 miles a day on my drive to and from work. I average about 24.5 mpg. I drive about 75 mph on the highway most of the way... and only have to contend with a stoplight or two. If mine were newer with a good tune up, I would expect around 28-30.
Enjoy your mpg's -Troy |
Absolutely.

The real challenge to getting 30mpg in one of these is keeping your foot out of it. Technically it's possible.
When I blow by somebody in a driving appliance only to have them be right behind me at the next light I can hear them thinking " wasn't that a waste". I'm thinking - who can I pass next? |
My wife gets 27-29 in town and 30 mpg+ consistently in her '84 Carrera (70-80 mph) and the engine has 212K miles on it! She does not put her foot into it as much as I would--if I ever get a chance to drive it!

I am loving the fact that the purchase of 3.2 Carrera was a wonderful decision and one of the few cars I can say that I have a real passion for. What else could we want out of a car...dependable, rugged, and economy? One word..WOW.
|
I share the love for the 3.2 Carrera - when I decided I had to own a 911 already, it was the sage advice of Pelicans that I should buy the best 911 I could afford and the 85 coupe was a purchase I will never regret. It is such a dependable and turn-key enthusiast's car, I just never looked back. Add to that the considerable power and decent fuel economy and you end up with a spirited true sports car that is as good as I could have hoped for.
|
I got 26.5 mpg on a 1300+ mile trip from Fla to Oh when I bought my 88 Carrera. Mostly 70-85 mph and punching it whenever possible. I did run long sections on cruise control. 30 mpg doesn't sound impossible but I'll never get it.
The large fuel tank and decent mileage add to the already satisfying 911 touring experience. |
