smoking 79 sc
I have have a 79 911 sc when you start it, it smokes. The smoke has a dark gray cast and smells very rich. After the engine warms up the smoke goes away but the rich smell is still there. Does any one have any ideas on what this could be from ?
P.S. after its warmed up and you rev it the smoke re appears ( the smell reminds me of a gas powered ups step van just starting out) ------------------ |

My '83 runs pretty rich in the cold start mode and makes plenty of smoke. When it warms up, it stops smoking altogether. I'm not concerned about the rich running symptoms you described when the engine is cold (smell and smoke). Smoke or rich smell after warmup may not be normal.
Interestingly, people who richen mixtures in CIS cars thinking of getting more power, actually get general poorer running and a plugged catalytic converter. The CAT dies after it smells like rotten eggs for a while. Hope the input helps. ------------------ '83 SC |

My 80 SC did this, it got worse as time went on. Ended up being worn valve guides. As the wear got worse, oil leaked down the guides into the cylinders so when I started up, the smoke came, but it was bluer in color.

Guys thank you for the information. Is there any type of test that will determine if its running rich or if it is the valve guides.
Thanks. |

You probably already have the best test instrument available and that's your nose.
If it smells rich then it probably is, because you know what burned oil smells like. My guess is that your SC is running rich and in need of guides. Joe |
