Changing Shift Rod Coupler Bushings...PLEASE HELP!

Ok I got 2 new bushings for my Shift Rod Coupler (the piece that hooks to the shift rod from the shifter and to the rod going into the trans) but the problem is getting the old ones out and the new ones in

I assume that the big pin pushes out so that the center will come off and then you just take each bushing out and put a new one in each side and then push the big pin back in. But I can't get the pin out! I have hit the darn thing over and over with a hammer and a punch and can't get it to come out. I am letting it soak over night in PB Blaster hoping that it may free it up but I don't know.

Has anyone ever done this before? If so how did you get the pin out? I hope to goodness I don't have to have this thing pressed out because no one around here knows how to properly use a press without damaging the part.

I gotta have these bushings changed and the coupler back on the car by Tuesday night.

So what do I do guys?

Thanks!

You are on the right track, I had to do the same thing last year and it was a pain. I did exactly what you have done so far... soaked it then clamped it in a vice and whacked at it until it gave up and came free. Putting it back together is much easier though
It took me a little bit to figure out that it was easier to remove the pin with the coupler out of the car.........(joke)

you'll get it out

A large bench vise and a couple of sockets are the way to go without any pounding ... small 1/4" drive socket against the pin, larger 3/8"drive deep socket to 'back-up' the bushing and let the pin come out.

Ok Warren I'll try your idea today hopefully it will work!

Thanks for your input guys, you keep me from just parking this car and forgetting about it. (Like I could actually do that after driving it already, I'M ADDICTED!)
