I am interested in buying this car, but carfax shows a couple times of failing smog. The car is in eBay warehouse form a powerseller who is overseas now. I did not see the car in person. Neither test drive. The price is attractive and eBay offers 100% refund even pickup. Is it (not passing smog) a concern?

What state are you in specifically? I don't know much about CA, but I think their smog checks are about as stringent as they come. In NC, just for comparison, cars 25yrs or older don't have to have emissions checks, just a safety inspection. For cars of these ages, I don't think it's uncommon to have some emissions issues, from running to rich, to to lean, to CO2 sensors not working, etc. These issues are "fixable".

From experience, I would say that there are enough people on this list for someone to be close enough to check the car out in person for you. And, always, ALWAYS, spend the little money to get a PPI done. It is very cheap insurance and peace of mind. Any of these cars can look fantastic in photographs, and the seller will tell you anything you want to hear. Use your head, not your heart.

chc - I would be very careful about bidding on a car with the owner abroad and the car in Ebay warehouse, this is a fairly well known scam! Do you have the item number?

This car has regularly failed emissions tests only to be fixed and pass a later test. Yes, failing a test in a concern made very important because you have not been able to have the car inspected. You are taking chance and need to have this car go through a thorough PPI. The are thousands of SC's out there. This one is not so special that you have to take a risk on it. Get it inspected and/or go out to see the car yourself.

the seller is responsible for the car passing smog when it changes hands. If you can get an inspection and the car is solid, why not? If you can't, then depends how lucky you feel. But the smog should be a non-issue. Could be a big thing...could be a small thing. Doesn't take much to fail smog in CA.

this is a common ebay scam - there is no warehouse, nothing of the sort. contact ebay directly and report this - they will validate that this is a scam!

Run away from this as fast as you can, don't waste time or money chasing this or any similar email you receive.

I called ebay as well as email and reported this to them, common scam they are seeing!
