Silence In The Back Row!

Just a commentary on a tire change I just made last weekend FWIW in someone elses future tire decision-making.

I dumped the howling, thumping, grinding Kumhos I had on the back for toooooo long and got some Yokohama AVS ES 100's back there. Huge difference - silence, smoothness. The Kumhos started out fine, but got rougher and very noisy pretty soon after getting them. I'm sure they have worked out fine for some, they were not my cup of tea.

Interesting, I went from two set of the AVS ES 100s to the Kumho MX and would never go back. Did you have the MXs or some other model?

The MXs outperform the ES 100s hands down and give about the same amount of life, hard to beat that :)

I had the Ecsta 712 225/50 VR 16s. I suspect this is an older model tire from the MXs ? I only had them for a bit more than a year. Maybe the desert heat was an issue? I don't know.

how old were the previous tires?

The Khumo 711 and 712s while inexpensive aren't great tires. The MX is a setup up from those in Khumo's lineup. The ES100s are better than the 711/712s, but they're prone to get louder as well as they wear.

I put ES 100's on my 944, and thought they were a pretty good tire for the money.

So I put them on the 911. Big mistake. I hated them. The 911 can easily overpower them. I removed them pretty quiclky, and sold them to a 944 owner with 17" wheels.

The 911 is much happier on SO-3's.

Digging, digging . .

Ahah! The tires I had on there [via the POs records] before were Dunlop SP Sport 4000'. Seems the went 20K miles or so as did the Kumho 712s. Maybe that's all one can reasonably expect on these cars. After all, granny isn't driving.
