2.8 build questions
 
I have plans to build a 2.8 twin plug, i figure it might be a little over my head but with help for the board im sure i will manage.

first question:

I read in anderson book that the 2.0 case is the best to build a 2.8 with, i wanted to get feedback from people who have actually done this.

What Bruce means is the aluminum ’65-’67 case, not all 2.0s.

It takes a lot of work:
Cylinder spigots.
Clearance for pistons at BDC.
Piston oil squirters.
Oil pressure relief bypass mod.
Clearance for later oil pump.
Convert to later chain housings.
Larger port for cam oiling.
Probable align bore and shuffle pins.
Possible windage relief.

Another choice is a 7R magnesium case;
If starting with a 2.4,
Cylinder spigots.
Head stud case savers.
Oil pressure relief bypass mod.
For sure align bore and shuffle pins.
Possible windage relief.

Another choice to get that displacement is starting with a 3.0 case and making it 66x95 mm stroke & bore.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each. With an early aluminum case, the engine can appear as a normal early 911 only be a high compression 2.8S. These are good sturdy cases but hard to find.

With the 7R case it is a little lighter but the case is slightly more prone to moving. If done correctly it is not an issue. This can be done to look exactly as a 2.4T.

Starting with a 3.0 case is probably the strongest and the short stroke allows for higher revs. A Carrera 3.0 or Turbo case is more difficult to find. If I were to go this route, I would make it 3.5 (74.4x100) starting with an SC 3.0.


The issue always comes up about twin plugs. Dual sparkplugs are a great advantage with larger bore and particularly with high compression. This is something you should consider.

Pelican rs911t has a 2.8S I built in ’74 and has been to DEs and more ever since … and the case has never been split.
