3.2 Rebuild, 3.6 swap or Turbo ?? and CA Smog Police

My 84 cab with the org 3.2L has ~150K on it, so I'm starting to plan the project, DIY with Wayne's great book to rebuild. I've read all the threads and dream of creating more HP with an upgrade to 3.4L, and/or a promotive turbo kit or maybe swapping to a 3.6L power plant.

I'm sure it will take me a long time to decide which way to go, but I have one basic question I need help with??

If I add a turbo, or swap to a 3.6L engine, what are the CA smog police going to say?? I know I still need all the anti-smog crap and the like. But what are the rules about putting in a turbo or a different engine?

15 years ago I bought a used 73 VW Bus engine to replace the one that blew up in my 74 Westfallia. When I sold it the new owner could not pass smog, even though the 73 engine had all of the required stuff, the 74 engine had different stuff and he failed the visual. I got sued over that deal........

For engine swaps, it must be engines of the same year or newer with all of the emissions equipment of that year in place. A sticker by the smog referee will then be issued. An aftermarket turbo not c.a.r.b approved will not pass the visual inspection unless it's done by a smog test shop unfamiliar with porsches.
