Motronic Ignition Triggering System?

Excuse the dumb question, but does the Motronic ECU use the Speed and Reference sensors on the flywheel to trigger the ignition system, on the pre-89 3.2 Carerra's?

I'm going to be doing a twin-plug conversion soon and was wondering, if I go to an aftermarket engine management system, would the trigger signal be provided by the 964/993 distributor? I heard these distributors have a built-in sync-signal for triggering?

Can you twin-plug ignition guru's please advise?
