How to tell if you have an exhaust leak or valve noise

My SC has developed a tick on the drivers side when it gets warmed up to about 220'
I believe its either valve noise or exhaust leak
How can you tell if its a exhaust leak?

I'm not sure how to describe the difference, other than to say valves are a more metallic, ticking sound, and exhaust leaks are more like a 'spitting' sound ...

Of course, the 'cute' answer is, if you adjust your valves and the mystery noise goes away ... then it wasn't an exhaust leak!

Thanks Warren
It was a metallic sound so I re adjusted my exhaust valves solved the problem

PS I picked up a mechanics stethascope at Pep Boys for $15 - it was real handy to locate which rocker was making all the noise along with other uses
