How To Adjust Shifter Linkage In 69
 

Ok I am in a real hurry so i have to make this short. I just replaced the shifter/trans coupler bushings on my 69 912 and I was putting it back together today but I can't seem to get the shifter adjusted back properly. I have read the technical articles on here but I just don't understand them. Anyone care to explain this process to me in plain English?

I will admit there is some amount of trial and error involved. I just did the adjustment last week and it did help a little. Basically you need to slide the coupler on the splined shaft loosely, pull up your shift boot so you can see down in it where the shift lever "ball" meets the bushing, then turn the coupler clockwise when viewed as if you are sitting in the seat of the car and hold it there, then without letting it move (helps to have someone hold it in place) adjust the shifting lever so that the part that is angled (down inside the tunnel area) is as close to vertical as possible, and slightly resting to the left. I don't know how different your 912 is from mine but it should be pretty close. Anyway, as far as adjusting it front to rear goes, mine has an allen screw that taps into the gear box shaft. I still had a heck of a time with it though...(I'd get it so it would engage 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, but it wouldn't go into reverse or 5th. then I would have the opposite problem.) You just have to play with it a bit.

I gave it a few more trys and finally got it just right and it's shifting a little better than before. Sometime soon I am going to replace the bushing on the end of the shifter so that should much more hopefully.
