Is it realy a big deal installing the turbo tie rod to a 911? How does it feel?

I just completed the change to turbo tie rods on my 80' 911. The entire project took about 2 hours. With the kit you will receive the tie rods, rod ends, and new boots that cover the end at the steering rack. The most difficult time I had with the change over was tightening the new rods at the steering rack end. You will need a 32 mm wrench for that. You will also need a tie rod removal tool to loosen the tie rod end. I would suggest that as you take one side off that you set the length of the new rod to match the old one you are removing. This way your alignment won't be too far off until you can get it set by an alignment shop. The feel is much crisper at the steering wheel now. The old 'sponge-like' feeling is gone. For the money it was worth the trouble. Good luck

I bought a set of turbo tie rods for my '87.
My thought was to have the alignment shop do the installation since it will need an alignment after installation and they have the tools and expertise to do the job. Couldn't cost much more than the cost of the special tools required.

I agree with the other post. Although I love to do upgrades myself, some don't add up timewise. I bought the parts myself for $119 from GPR. The garage charged me 1 1/2 hour labor to do the install. Came to a little more that $150. I know thats $150 you could spend elsewhere but they had all the tools and were able to work of the car while up on a lift, (much faster). Since I has to take it to them for an alignment anyway, why not. If you are going to do them there was a great article in Excellence about a year ago with all the information to do this. Michael.
