Rear lid ground wires.
Gents. Roadslayer here. Semi-newbee. Say! Gotta' question for you. I'm reassembling the rear lid for my '69 911T. Wires, trim, etc. Why is there two ground straps from the lid to the body, via the hinge? Isn't one enough? What do they do? The two license plate lights have their own ground wires. And they both work when tested on the work table. Am I missing something?

I.m not sure if they are found on a 69 but there is a small light on the inside of the deck lid to illuminate the engine bay.

The engine bay light also has it's own ground. I think they ground all the car parts to avoid sparks between parts caused by static electricity.

Yes. Mine has two cute little lights at the rear edge of the lid to illuminate the license plate and,I guess the engine bay at night. They have a wire with a large ring connector that grounds to the body along with a bunch of other ground wires. So maybe the big ground straps from the lid to the body may or may not do something.

There is an extra engine bay light. Probably your car does not have it, it should be in the middle of the engine deck lid.
This is the light I am talking about. Engine compartment light, where? |

Oh,ok. I can see where that light would mount but no,mine doesn't have that. Maybe the 'big ol' ground straps are 'just in case' or something.

The ground straps bonding the rear decklid to the body were required in Europe...something to do with radio interference. They do not ground lighting. I removed mine...cleaned up the engine compartment some... (some mo-mo re-installed them when they put on my fiberglass hood...).

Well,Gee! I guess I can see where they might apply to radio interference in Europe, but seeings how,,,,,well anyway,I was thinking around the same lines. Maybe I'll just leave them out.

I met a guy at a local car show with an early 70's Firebird/Esprit. He purchased the car years ago from a solider who brought it home from Germany. The car has ground straps between the front hood, trunk lid and body (and H4 headlights). He couldn't understand what they were for until I showed him the same exact straps on my '79 ROW 911SC.
My '74 T/A has no such ground straps. It's a Euro thing... One of my very first posts on this forum was inquiring about said "straps". I thought they were there as a safety in case the rear decklid let loose at high speed ![]() Last edited by Danny_Ocean; 04-08-2007 at 10:32 AM.. |
