LED is on when fan is off?
 

I just wired my SPAL oil cooler fan to a relay and a switch in the cabin. I successfully wired the fan to turn on and off, but the LED on the switch is on when the fan is off and off when the fan is on. Shoudn't it be the other way around? There has to be a simple solution, but I'm stumped. Any ideas?

This situation is what I anticipated ... when I suggested in the other thread that you post a pic of the instructions on the back of the display card for that switch!

You can always operate a relay from either a ground or power signal ... but the lamp or LED in an illuminated switch almost always requires a switched power signal to correctly display the state of the operated device!

Early S Man. To ease your frustration, the box didn't have a schematic. However, I decided that I was just going to live with it. So, I proceeded to button everything up, which entailed disconnecting the three wires to the switch. In time, I connected the wires again and wouldn't you know it, I gave her a try and the LED light turned on when the device turned on! Maybe your right, ruf-Porsche; the wires needed to be switched and I inadvertently did!

Learned this by trial and error. Just added a Radio Shack LED rocker switch to the front oil cooler fan. Tried to wire it on the ground side of the relay (pin #85 to ground)...could get the fan to come on, but not the LED. Rewired on the power side of the cirucit and all is well. Even with the switch added, the fan remains fuse protected (pulled fuse and nada).

Switch
Connections:

"Line" - to fan relay pin #30 (common-hot)
"Load" - to fan pos lead (via snap-on wire splice)
"Ground" - to ground (chassis)

From right to left: Line, Load & Ground (extra pigtail connectors from test wiring on initial ground wiring plan trying to get LED to work)

Nice work, and it looks good too! Having control over the cooler fan makes one feel more powerful.

I do feel better having control over the fan. Interesting notes about the LED and switch location I chose.

(1) The LED is bright (very bright) consider this when choosing switch location as it may be annoying at night
(2) I can see a reflection of the LED in my side mirror, WTF :(
(3) The potentially annoying aspects of the bright LED really should be a "non-issue" becasue (a) the fan will not be run that often and (b) it will be used mostly during the day. ;)

Nevertheless, a very satisfying and useful project!
