Is there a budget minded method of adding external oil cooling on a '72?
I've been reading threads for several hours now and best I can tell:
1) My '72 w/ a 3.0L purchased for DE and autocross really needs external oil cooling. 2) It's going to be very expensive and a big pain in the butt. Anyone care to argue against either of these points? Please? :( |
I think you're right but I hope you're wrong!
Gotta do the same thing myself and hoping I can go the budget route somehow.... Perhaps the good luck fairy will tap me on the head with a magic wand...! |
Similar boat too... I've started collecting stuff like a Mocal thermostat, and SC brass lines. I'm looking around for an appropriate cooled (Carrera/RX7 etc...).
Having the 72 oli tank is possibly working against you, but I'm pretty sure Elephant Racing does some cool stuff for your model. |
While I know very little about the addition of a front mount cooler to a 72, I weighed all the options while adding a front mount to my 74. The best value was factory hard lines, T-stat, etc, which I think are a better solution than flex hose anyhow.
For my little 2.7 I chose a trombone cooler, which I scored for free (thanks Vash). You can also get a correct for 72 radiator style cooler for about $150 last time I looked (obviously used). Additional cooling is expensive, but not something to skimp on IMHO. Dan Petchel at Cars Inc had the best prices on the goods and on shipping. Also, don't forget you can upgrade your fan pulleys to spin ~1.82:1 for additional cooling air. Grady has posted a lot on this. |
I know I'm naive about this, but can someone explain something to me? A major issue I keep reading about is having to tap into the oil tank on the '72.
OK... I know this is a simplified look at it, but in the current setup, I've got an engine and an oil tank. Oil moves from the tank to the engine and back again via some hoses. I want oil to go to the front of the car to a cooler. What's wrong with plumbing it such that when the oil leaves the engine it goes to the front of the car through the cooler and then back to the tank? I understand the need for a thermostat and that the hard brass lines are better, but I'm just working on the basics here. |

gather the parts and bring them over to Chucks, it will be a tune up and front oil set up session ;) |
Lee,
Here's the thread I was talking about. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/296603-1972-911t-external-carrera-oil-cooler-install.html I think I'll come over later with Sam. What time is best? |
|
Thanks Don... so you're saying you have all those parts I can use?:D
