Need help taking fan off
Hi everyone,
I am replacing my alternator fan with the 1.67:1 fan, along with the "smaller" ratio pulley. Um..yeah..that sounds about right. Anyway, I'm having trouble taking the fan off. Any suggestions? I've tried a rubber mallet...nothing. Please help! Thanks... ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

Jeff, I have found the clear yellow plastic mallets do a good job ... the ideal size has a 'head' approximately 2" in diameter, and about 8-9" long. Unscrew the 22 mm nut until the end of the alternator shaft is flush with the side surface of the nut, then give it a good, persuasive smack square on the end of the shaft with the mallet in your right hand, while holding the fan blades with your legs apart, sitting on a stool, and left hand under the alternator to catch it when the fan pops loose. The fan won't actually come completely off with that nut on the shaft, the hand under there is to ensure that you don't drop the whole fan/alternator assembly!

Thanks Warren,
I will try that as soon as I have access to my car. Thanks again! ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

Warren,
I went home and tried exactly what you've said. The fan didn't budge. Any other suggestions? Thanks. ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

Try and saturate the shaft and fan with Liquid Wrench then repeat Warren Hall routine. Should do the trick.

OK, after the pentrating oil has soaked in for a day or two, try supporting the whole assembly by two short pieces of 2x4, or 2x6 lumber by the sides of the alternator, but actually resting on the underside of the fan, then pound on the alternator shaft with the plastic mallet! A press is the next step, if 'manual' methods do not work.

I found the best way to remove the fan is to thread two of the holes on the fan housing and screw a bolt through it to push against the alternator housing. It works great for removing it.

Thanks Rich, Warren, and Steve...
I will try liquid wrench, and if it doesn't work, I'll look for the holes on the fan..I think the holes on mine is covered by black paint which I think the PO is responsible for... BTW...the engine is still in the car, how do I place 2X4s or 2X6s to support it? Thanks! ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |
