can't identify dashboard switches

Hi everyone,

After already one year owning a 80 targa, I still can't figure out all the switches on the dashboard, does anybody have a pic of a dashboard with the explanation for all the various switches, and what they control?
What are the levers next to the hand brake supposed to do? One is red and the other does not have a colored cap on it....
I've been rocking my brain to figure out why there is a disconnected electrical wire between the two sunvisors.....is it for a courtesy light that now is missing?

Thank-you so much for your help!!

The levers are for heat.

Not sure what the wire is, probably a targa thing.

The red levers let the hot air from from the heat exchangers into the cabin. As for all the other switches, start working them and see what device responds.

hi, the problem is that some things still are not functionning: fog lights, interior lights a/c etc..
there is a very little rocker switch right above the ignition switch, is this sw a original porsche? do others have it?

Netspeed 09-11-2006 08:52 PM

Do you have pics of the switch?

Yes. On coupes there are two: One (fore/aft) for the sunroof and one (side-to-side) to toggle the L/R exterior mirror adjustment. Since you have a Targa, you only have the latter.

Also, yes, the dangling wires between the sun-visors are for an interior light.

I would strongly advise that you pick up an original owner's manual for your model year if you don't have one already. You can usually find them on eBay or at used P-car parts yards.

Maybe the problem is you've been "rocking your brain." You should stop rocking it and start "wracking" it.

Post a pic of your dash with the mystery switches circled and I'll compare to mine...

On my Targa there is a temeprature sensor between the two sunvisors, the only courtesy light is in the targa bar.

However, my car has automatic heater (numbered wheel instead of 2 levers by the handbrake) so this may not apply to your car.

Since you don't have the automatic heater control, it not the heat sensor between the sunvisors.

It's probably a hard wire for a radar detector that a POs probably had.

You have helped very much.
I am going to upload some pics of the heather control by the hand-brake, on my car there are two levers one is red the other does not have a color cap. When I lift the red one, the other starts lifting too after a short delay.....
There is also one round knob, on one side is numbered and on the other side says DEF. Is this an automatic heather control?
I can't figure it out....

Thank-you
Rino

Yes!!!

The wires are probably for the temperature sensor

I have never seen both the round knob (automatic)and the levers (manual) in the same car but you never know.

Simon's Porsche 911 SC site has a complete copy of the Drivers Manual posted online. It is for an 83, but most of the controls are the same. Check it out - it should answer a lot of your questions. Oh, and thanks, Simon!

My car gas both the heater auto dial and the levers.

Whenever I discover something new on my car, I break out the tools and give it a closer look. Not only do I learn what the "gadget" does but also how.

If you go my route, you need to be able to tell when you are getting in over your head though.

If the gadget offends you, pluck it out.
