Toyota Supra Vs 993 Twin Turbo

The following tale was emailed to me yesterday.

I shall preface it by saying that the excited author of this account is the owner of a modified Supra twin turbo.

Tell me if you think his elation is justified!

--------------------------------------------

I usually don't post my road kills, but this one is different. This was an awesome kill. The best to date by far....

My wife and I were heading to pick up some dinner and I decided to take the Pacific Coast Hwy through Malibu going to Woodland hills. I was going to take the Kenan Dume road, which is about 15 miles of twisties.

About a mile before Kenan Dume what do I see, about three cars in front of me???? Yep... A 911TT Yellow, sweet looking car. No way to play on PCH, too much traffic. So I start doing the next best thing... Praying for him to turn in to Kenan road....

There IS a god, he gets in to the right turn lane followed by me.... Traction control comes off, I glance at my wife, who is completely against this, but there is NO WAY I'm letting this go.... I wanted for him to notice me so I rev the engine and I see him looking in his rear view mirror... Me being the nice guy, I waive at him saying hello!! see me back here???

Light turn green and he makes the turn into Kenan Dume road and punch it... Oh **** my car is TTC and I didn't put the DP on yet, since I took it off to do the smog check... It seems like hours before my turbos spooled up.. Any way 1st gear the guy got me by about 1 car and still pulling 2nd gear still pulling away from me 3rd no luck but he is not pulling that hard 4th DAMN he is about
10 cars ahead of me... **** **** **** I'm on 5th 120+ and now it seems I'm closing the gap a little. We go through couple of high speed turns and I'm now pulling him in closer. We are doing 130+ and about 1/2 mile ahead a posted 40mph right turn. No way I was going to loose to this guy, not on the canyon, I'm floored on 5th and get on the brakes about 100 yards before the turn, by this time he is only about 5 cars ahead of me. I was on the brakes so hard couple of times my pedal started paulsating (ABS). Hard on the brakes and drop it down to 4th and mid corner floored it... OOPS I'm at his rear bumper and gaining on him... This was insane 80+ on a 40mph turn and we are side by side. Road straigtens and I'm now pulling away from him, get to the next turn, I'm standing on the brakes, the rear end started to dance a bit but no biggie and dump it down to 3rd and hammer it again. Now I'm about 2 cars ahead of him. I'm on the ragged edge of my car. We keep going at this all the way through the canyon.. I'm grdually pulling away from him. After
about 10 mile in to this, he is about 1/2 mile behind me. I got to hand it to the Supra, as my suspension system is bone stock and I only had the big tires. This guy was driving the hell out of the Porsche as I was doing the same with the Supra. The TT being 4 wheel drive he definitely has an advantage over me on the twisties, but not today... I got to give it to the Supra for the
handling and braking. This thing out did the 911 in both catagories. Had I had my DP may be the acceleration too.

At the end of the canyon I enter the 101 Fwy headding East and keeping it under 65 since my wife, of whom I completely forgot while dancing with the 911, is in a state of shock.. chardiac arrest?? No she's still breating. About 5 minutes later who pulles in next to me??... The 911. The guy
literlly took his baseball cap off and gave me a thumbs up.. I gave him a thumbs up as well and he sped off...

This was unbeleavable and a such a rush.... I RAPED A 911TT IN THE CANYON YEEEEHAAA.

Sounds like something off one of the 'Aesop's Fables' websites.

I'd hate to believe it's true but anything is possible. I may have to experiment with the next Supra I see. I'll let you know.

Sounds to me like the guy in the 993 saw some sense and realised the guy in the Toyota was dangerous and backed off.

No way a stock Supra will ever out handle a 993.

Yes, anything can happen. But I bet the driver of the 993 TT does not know fully how to handle the car. And, just maybe, was afraid the rear end might give out and cause the car to spin out of control. I know this because it's one of my biggest fears driving my 993 hard on twisty roads.

Matt,
I think you have selectively edited this tale. The first sentence should read:
" When i wake up in the morning I usually dont post the road kills I make in my dreams. But this one is.........."

He sure had detailed accounts of the facts.120MPH in 5TH? Does anyone use 5TH to climb? ON curves? When I drive like that (not on an open HWY in a mountain pass with blind oncomming.)I don't look at the speedo. When some ******* in a cheese jap car wants to run me I let'em go so when they hit something none of the scrap hits my ride. I lived in CA. for 20 years. And its Kanan Dume RD.

Obviously no one knows first hand what really happened except the people involved but this type of thing scares the hell out of me. Sure, pushing your car a little is fun in the right environment but if someone tried pulling a stunt like that on me I'd be more concerned with jotting down his tag number and reloading my 40. cal.
Public roads are no place for crazy ***** like that. (if it really happened like that)
Just an opinion.
I wonder if he had a sticker on his windshield that says: "Powered By Rice"

The Turbo Supra is a nice ride, make no mistake about it. And its handling, bone stock, is very impressive, if harsh. But a 993 TT should be able to take care of it nicely, in the right hands. The awd system alone should make up the difference in the twisties.

As to power, its unclear what the Supra owner had done to his car, but those cars are very tweakable. Not at all rare to get 600 horsepower or more out of them (but usually that's done by going to a single turbo, and this dude refers to "the turbos"). Does seem clear that he had 150 lbs or so of passenger in his car, while the Porsche did not.

It also seems clear that he was willing to risk his wife's life, not to mention his own, and anyone else's who might have been on the road at the time.

And in the end, it's a Toyota. A damn good one, but still a Toyota.

I sure would've like to have seen that one! I've been involved in enough of these encounters to know that you can't extract one bit of truthful information concerning the abilitiies of either car. After you wiegh in road conditions, driver ability, driver stupidity, unknown modifications, etc, etc, you got nothin'. I got drawn into one of these situations once and quickly realized that the antogonist (a Mitsu 3000VR4) was much less concerned with safety than myself. I hit the breaks hard and disengaged. The next thing I knew it was all over town that he had shut me down! That is the data you get from street racing.

BTW I really wish my car was made of 30% "post consumer content"

I could melt holes in his friggin' "recycled milk jug" plastic bumpers with a set of H-4s!!!

Buying milk is about the only good thing those ridiculous whoop spoilers are good for . . .pushing the shoppin' cart.

"Which coincidentally require FAA aproval in several states"

I'd Never own one >
I kinda like that..."powered by rice"...hehe hehe hehe

Nice irresponsible fun. I had a 300ZX (nice car) and bought my 89 turbo cab(very special car). If I wanted a street missle, I could have gotten a Viper GTS. BTW my lightly modified GSXR will take all of them for about 1/6th the$$ and lot more balls/skill on the riders part.
I would bet that my TC wins hands down in the female attention contest, and that's a race I still enjoy winning.

Single Guy having fun david

I almost bought the Toyota, but after driving it I couldn't get past the sound of the engine. I have owned Porsches for the last 14, or so, years and I love the way they handle, sound, feel.

The Toyota owner sounds very irresponsible as opposed to the Porsche owner. There is no question in my mind that if the owner of the TT hadn't backed off, he should of eaten the Toy for lunch. The Toyota owner said that the TT pulled away from him in pretty much all of the gears, so what happened? The TT backed off.

Of course, anything can happen, but it's still a rice burner.

Got to agree with most everyone.. The guy in the TT backed off. He made his point and left the guy in the other ride to flush out the law...
But on a race track, I can see almost any car (properly driven) beat most others (improperly driven). My brother used to out lap NSX's at CarGuys in his Integra (no sh**) in the twisties, but get to the straights and he waved as they went back by.

That’s just it, isn’t it? You back off against these guys that drive with a one way ticket, and you get ascribed to a myth that either says you’re not deserved of your car, or that your car is not living up to its own myth.

There are many times where I’ve answered a challenge for the express intent of defending a perceived keenness to expose the 911 as something fallible and inferior, according to its own legend.

Why does this keenness exist, especially amongst Rice Boys? Well, I think it has a lot to do with being able to modify one of these cars to produce 600bhp without having to modify and improve your driving style or your driving abilities. It’s this accessibility and ease of use that gives these guys a sense of reckless invincibility.

It's occasions like the one described in the tale that where you must put your life ahead of the legend. The 993TT pilot simply exercised restraint, and that says more about Porsche than him or his ride!

The young man in the Toyota would be well advised to spend his "Turbo" money on a basic class in Enlish composition at the community college. Perhaps his improbable tale would take on a small amount of credibility.

As anyone who reads this month's Excellence will note, 911TT bodywork does not necessarily equal 911TT! (Although I'd probably rather have the '69 than a late TT )

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd say stuff like this is best saved for the track! Where's the radar trap when you need it???

Am I the only one here who would have been instantly single again had it been me and my wife in that Supra?

Hey, I've beaten a 993 twin turbo, though mine was only at an off ramp, of which we both took around 125mph or so...

This wasn't a race though, he wasn't pushing it until he saw me closing on his rear view mirror, so it's probably not accurate to state that.

However ours was a lot friendlier, we had icecream together about 30 min later, and he said he had a 951S himself (ofcourse that made me very happy!)

Oh, well, yes it's very unsafe to race on the street, there is way too many variables, and you can be involved in an accident even if you're careful, (though in my opinion you can reduce your chanses of being involved in an accident if you pay attention to DRIVING) and obeying all the laws, going faster will only make it worse.

I've recently hit a curb after a bit of spirited driving combined with some bit worn tires, a loose strut mount... Suspension damage that I'm paying for was apperantly enough to show me the light, (well, along with being arrested over the spring break for 136 in a 65, going to court in may 30th) PCA membership application sent yesterday...

I will be honest, if anybody(specially a japanese car with somebody who can't drive behind the wheel) wants to race me, I will, but never quite take turns in drifts with the car loose for the "Hey I beat you!"'s sake...

Honest opinion:

A tweaked supra turbo will take a stock 933tt, specially if the 993 driver wasn't pushing...

Yes, but Kanan is actually one of the less-twisty roads in Malibu/Calabassas...my vote is that the tt would make fried rice in the really tight stuff, if not in the straights as well

Also note that there is always talk of tuned Supras and the like, but the "competition" in these tall tales always seems to be stockers...hmmmm.
